Chapter 20.
Getting any sleep in this new environment was obviously optional. Iâd spent most of the night tossing and turning in my still-damp clothing, trying to keep warm lying beside a dying fire. I did consider adjusting the settings on the System, but I thought it was probably a bad idea when my mind was not thinking straight. The last thing I needed was to alter something I couldnât change back.
I wasnât sure why my sleep was so poor. Perhaps a lot on my mind? Maybe. And not helped by just how uncomfortable I felt. I missed a nice warm bed, soft pillow and blankets. Such simple luxuries Iâd always taken for granted. Even my time spent camping with my father and brother was never more than a few days at a time. Sleeping and living rough never bothered me then, but I knew after those few days, Iâd be back to all the usual things. That said, I certainly had a lot to be thankful for, thanks to my dad taking me on those trips. Iâd achieved so much in the few days in this world because of what heâd taught me.
The fire was now out, having long burned the last of the wood weâd collected and stacked. It was still too dark to go and look for more. I was cold and uncomfortable. My mind was restless and filled with the uncertainties of what lay ahead for me. I was tired, and I knew that in another hour or so, Iâd be eating breakfast and have Leah on my case, telling me to go find her treasure. I wondered what it would be. We were still in the starting zone, so surely it wouldnât be anything amazing. Perhaps my early thoughts that it was books were not far from reality. Would I be happy for Leah if it were amazing? Hmm. Not sure.
The next moment, I felt something prodding into my side. I opened my eyes to see it was light, and Leah was being her usual tactful self by poking the toe end of her boot into my ribs. I must have dozed off after all. Shame it hadnât been a few hours earlier. I guess some sleep was better than none.
âCome on⦠Letâs eat and get going.â
I protested, although most of the words that came out sounded as if Iâd lost the ability to talk coherently. My brain hadnât fully awakened yet, and Leahâs continued poking me wasnât helping my mood.
I noticed that Kepit was already awake and going through some sort of weird stretching routine, not something Iâd seen him do before. Perhaps his night had been as uncomfortable as mine, and he was trying to stretch those tight muscles. With Leah already on my case, I removed a cracker and a few berries, offering up a few of the latter to Kepit for when he finished contorting himself into positions I could only dream of doing. Was the lad made from rubber? My back most certainly didnât bend the way his was.
